Game recap: Regina Pats defeat the Edmonton Oil Kings 3-2
First Period
Much like the night before in Red Deer, the Pats came out aggressive in the offensive zone and created offensive opportunities by taking the puck away repeatedly. The Oil Kings recovered well in most instances, blocking shots and keeping the Pats from capitalizing on their chances. Trent Ouellette came the closest when he hit the post after a one-timer in front of the goal. The Oil Kings started to put on the pressure late in the frame when they went to a 5-on-3 powerplay, but the Pats survived, getting to the intermission tied 1-1. The Oil Kings ended up controlling the shots, 10-3 in the period.
Second Period
The middle frame saw the Pats and Oil Kings put some goals on the board. Just two minutes into the period, the Oil Kings found the scoresheet when Henrik Samuelsson moved the puck to Curtis Lazar in front and the 2013 draft prospect slid the puck into the net for a 1-0 lead. Regina would respond with the man advantage as Lane Scheidl unleashed a rocket from the point that beat Tristan Jarry for a tie game. Matt Hewitt was in a zone in the second period as he turned away 24 shots in the period to help the Pats to a lead. On the powerplay again, the Pats dissected the Oil Kings’ top ranked penalty kill and Lane Scheidl struck again alone in front for his second of the game and the Pats took a 2-1 lead into the third while trailing in the shot count 35-9.
Third Period
Edmonton kept coming in the third period as they looked for the tying goal. The Oil Kings would get it as T.J. Foster got a bounce in front and the puck came in behind Hewitt to square the game 2-2. The Oil Kings kept up the pressure, but Regina came back with another chance. Dyson Stevenson shot the puck towards Jarry and the Edmonton goaltender couldn’t hold onto it. The puck bounced to Morgan Klimchuk who sent it into the cage off Jarry to lift the Pats to a 3-2 lead. That set the stage for the Hewitt for close the door the rest of the way and lead the Pats to a 3-2 win with a brilliant 53 save performance.
